THE WELL OF MOSES
This is the place where Moses is supposed to have met the seven daughters of Jethro. Near the well is the tree they call the burning bush. The same kind of bush that Moses saw burning with fire and not being consumed that God's voice spoke from. Many people were touching it and having their picture taken next to it. The was also a small mosque built near here. Hundreds of years ago a local imom demand that a mosque be a part of St Catherine's Monastery since this story of Moses is a part of their religion too.
After this we walked to the main sancturary where people were lined up to look at a relic which turned out to be a piece of a bone of St Catherine's which was under glass. Meanwhile there was a monk stationed there to tell people not to touch the walls. After that I walked through a little icon museum which was across the way.
Along the wall thirty feet in length enclosed by a fense two or three feet above the ground is a place that is filled with the skulls of all the monks who had died there in it's long history.
I had a hard time getting into this place. For one thing I am inclined to believe that Mt Sinai is not in this place. I believe that the real Mt Sinai is in Arabia where there is more evidence that those events took place there. This is just my opinion. But to come right down to it, it really doesn't matter.
After this short visit to St. Catherine's Monastery we went to a resturant nearby and had lunch, and then it was off to a resort called Nuweibaa where we would stay for two nights.
NUWEIBAA
The stay in Nuweibaa was to be purely a few days of leisure. There were no tours and no going anywhere. We were just to be here on our own and do what ever we wanted. I took this time to wash my clothes. I washed them in the shower and draped them over chairs on the balcony. The sun was out very bright so it took no time at all for them to dry. I needed the time we spent there to just rest and catch up on some sleep.
When I wasn't eating, sleeping and resting I was watching TV and also actively staying out of the sun. I was only in the sun when I had to be. One time I did take a walk out to the beach. The water of the Red Sea is blue green in color. There is supposed to be some amazing underwater sights in these waters. Many colorful fish and all kinds of coral. If you are into this kind of thing, this is the place to be.
I did find out later that it was at this place in Nuweibaa where Moses led the people of Isreal across the Red Sea. Someone had found an ancient pillar on the beach farther south from where I was that had words like, Moses, Isreal on it. Also there was a similar pillar on the other side of the water in Arabia with similar words on it. There is supposed to be a mountain over there that matches the description in the scriptures more accurately and there is an altar with a calf carved in it and also a place that looked like water had at one time gushed out from a rock. A few people have been there and taken pictures of it, but the Saudi Arabian government is keeping people away from it for now. I have seen pictures of this on the internet and You Tube and it is very convincing.
THOUGHTS ON FOOD
Now to change the subject a little bit. The food at this resort was somewhat good. The first night I stayed there they served chili con carne which was the best I had ever tasted. It was perfect. I went back for seconds and thirds. They had quite a variety of food. Potatoes are one of my favorite foods of all time, but I did not like the way the Egyptians cooked them. Most of the time they were way over cooked. I don't know whether they use them in their diet or not. By the way they cooked them I would say they didn't. I think they just cook them for the foreigners that come to their country and have no clue on how they are supposed to taste. That is just my opinion.
There was some kind of Spanish rice they served at Nuweibaa that was green. I thought that was unusual. It was good though. It seems French dressing in Egypt is white. I noticed that at Nuwiebaa, and also on the ships on the Nile. In my country it is red.
On the second day I was there I came back to my room after lunch and found a note under the door in an envelope. It said that we were to leave the next morning at 6 o'clock. I passed the word to my fellow travelors. They said that they did not recieve a similar note.
